+ 0 - 0 | § ...and another thing

I am finishing up a project on this web page. It is members-only, it has a calendar, task list (honey-do's), bookmarks, project management, polls and lots of things (eventually a check book balance/Accounts payable application). Anyway, if you want an account to share in the fun, post a reply to this post or email me and I will create a user account for you.
Those of you that participated in the old varlog site will notice a similarity in busy-ness, but this one is not creative writing oriented but more like an online fridge where you can stick stuff. It is PHGroupware and to login go to www.nathancblack.com/phpgw.

Ever watch a movie, and when its over you feel like you can conquer the world? Or seen that commercial where the monkeys devise a catapult to get over the wall into the polar bear pool? I just read an Essay by Paul Graham and got exactly that rush. I have deleted my comments five times now becuase the flood of thoughts are so intense all I can write is YEA! and EXACTLY!

*That* is intense.

*Note on the picture: This snapshot of Ryan is actually through the plastic window on the roof of his stroller during nap time while on a stroll through downtown austin. He is not in a bubble or anything like that.

+ 0 - 0 | § Staying Dry

... Record daily maximum rainfall set at Austin /Bergstrom...

Bands of heavy rain fell in Austin yesterday, Sunday July 25th.
The total rainfall amount was 1.74 inches. This breaks the
previous daily rainfall record for this date of 0.67 inches
set in 1949.
Nothing beats a southern rain. The back of the apartment faces south so there is precious little rain that actually makes it onto the patio. Sitting there watching the rain dump was good for about a half hour of entertainment. Ryan was practicing saying "Thunder" and "Lightning".

22 week ultrasound is complete with snapshots and VHS tape. Gender is, with 99% probability, a female. :)

Currently the winning name is Abigail.. The final middle name will be announced at a later date as it is undecided. First runner up is Brittany. (spellings are not the final spellings, since we could always switch to a different font and have something else be better hinted.. )

+ 0 - 0 | § Is right, right?

Every day we are faced with decisions and we all attempt to make the "best" choice for each decision. Sometimes there is an obvious better choice of any set of choices but to say it was the only "right" choice could imply that we are not aware of other choices or the possible outcome. So how do you decide the best choice? Read on for how I see it. Continued..

+ 0 - 0 | § Boot Now!

I was asked the other day why I type out "shutdown -r now" instead of just typing "init 6", as the latter saves several keystrokes over the former. Well, my answer, which I feel the need to share publicly, is that from being an administrator the thought of dropping a server to runlevel 6 or 0 instantly makes my plasma dry. Next, I am a touch typist which means the time saved between the two is negligible. Lastly, in production, I generally use a time frame of at least 5 minutes with the shutdown just to leave me an out if at the last minute I decide to abort the shutdown. Never know when I will want to let a process have a few more seconds before termination...

Check this article over at alibi.com. For those not wanting to click, the Canadian airport security stuck a bottle of TNT (explosives) in some doods suit case to let the bomb-sniffing dogs find it, only the dogs failed and they lost the bag.

WHOOPS!

Some days I still wake up and just think: "Holy Cats, I'm in Texas". Last weekend, on the trip back from Galveston, we had passed through Houston and it was nearing lunch time. I saw a sign that said something about a park, so I took the exit. F.M. 1155, it was not quite as quick as I had expected but about 25 miles later we landed at The Birthplace of Texas. We stayed long enough to read a few of the signs and eat a turkey leg, roast sausage on a stick, some tortilla chips and a bag'o'carrots.

+ 0 - 0 | § Play Ball

Sunday, I discovered the football pitch where the Austin Lightning soccer team plays. I got to catch the last 20 minutes of the game including 3 of the 4 goals. The lightning got shocked by Memphis 4-0. (pun intended) I then found out it was the last home game of the season. Oh how to be so excited yet so disapointed at the same time. Now I know where Cedar Park is (Northwest of Austin), as well as the temporary stadium at the Williamson County Regional Park.

Note, all 4 fans in the stands.

+ 0 - 0 | § Flip Side

two-faced
adj marked by deliberate deceptiveness especially by pretending one set of feelings and acting under the influence of another

Some people tend to be deceptive, even if it is unintentional, by simply attempting to feed you what they believe you want to hear instead of the truth. This is incredibly annoying to me, especially when it is under the guise of "considering the feelings of who you are talking too". How many people really like to be treated this way? Luckily the few do not ruin it for the many.

This past weekend we took a trip to Galveston. Quick day trip but boy I must say it was awesome. Galveston looks so much prettier than Corpus. Corpus just had oil docks for tankers and looked like Detroit, onlyl with the Gulf on one side. It was a nice day, during the heat we went to Moody Gardens and swam in their pools. They let us use a life jacket for free so Ryan got to float and bob on his own. He could dog paddle from one side to the other, and did at least 4 times.
Look for the pix, on /photos soon.
